- Daily buck limit: One antlered buck per day.
- Antlerless deer: Daily limits vary by zone. In Zone A, hunters may take two antlerless deer per day, or one antlerless deer and one antlered buck per day.
Hunting Licenses and Requirements
Before you hunt deer in Alabama, you’ll need:
- A valid Alabama hunting license. Residents and nonresidents can buy licenses online through Outdoor Alabama. Nonresidents can choose short-term licenses that fit a 3- to 5-day guided trip.
- Hunter education certification if you were born on or after August 1, 1977.
- A harvest record and Game Check report. Every deer must be recorded on your harvest record and reported through Alabama’s Game Check system (app, online or phone) within the required time.
- Hunter orange during gun seasons, as required by state law.
Most guided lodges, including ours, will walk you through licensing when you book, so there are no surprises when you arrive.
When Is the Rut in Alabama?
Alabama’s rut timing surprises many out-of-state hunters. Across much of the state, and especially the Black Belt, peak rut activity usually happens from late December through January. That’s weeks after the rut has ended in the Midwest and Northeast.
What that means for your hunt:
- Early season (October – mid-November): Deer follow food patterns. Acorn-bearing hardwoods and food plots are key, and it’s prime time for bowhunters.
- Pre-rut (late November – mid-December): Bucks start making scrapes and rubs, and daytime movement picks up.
- Rut (late December – January): Mature bucks move during daylight chasing does. These dates book up first every year.
- Late season (late January – February 10): Worn-down bucks return to food sources, and cold fronts can produce excellent movement.

Why the Alabama Black Belt Is Whitetail Country
The Black Belt is a band of dark, fertile soil running across central Alabama. It grows the nutrient-rich forage that produces bigger bodies and heavier antlers, and it has long been known as some of the best deer hunting in Alabama.
Master Rack Lodge sits in the heart of the Black Belt, with more than 8,000 acres of privately managed land near Union Springs. Our hunters have access to:
- 200+ tree stands placed over proven travel corridors and food sources
- 130+ managed food plots planted to hold deer all season
- Mature hardwood bottoms full of white oaks and acorn-bearing trees
- Year-round habitat and feeding programs built around fair-chase hunting
Guided vs. Self-Guided Deer Hunts in Alabama
Much of Alabama’s best land is private, so a guided hunt or lodge package is often the most reliable way for visiting hunters to get on quality deer.
A guided Alabama deer hunt typically includes:
- Access to private, managed property
- Stand placement based on current deer movement
- Transportation to and from stands
- Help with recovery, field dressing and processing
- Lodging and meals
At Master Rack Lodge, every package includes comfortable lodge accommodations with private rooms, en-suite baths and home-cooked Southern meals after each hunt. You focus on hunting, and we handle the rest.
Choosing the Right Hunt for You
Rifle and muzzleloader hunters: Our guided whitetail deer hunts cover every Zone A firearm season, from the November opener through the late-season rut.
Bowhunters: Our archery-only hunts take place on land that hasn’t been hunted with a firearm in more than 30 years, with century-old hardwoods and very low hunting pressure.
Families, military and law enforcement: Our family hunt specials offer discounted packages, two-person stands and no age restrictions. It’s a great way to introduce a young hunter to Alabama deer hunting.
Tips for a Successful Alabama Deer Hunt
- Book rut dates early. Late-December and January weeks are the most requested every season.
- Plan for changing weather. Alabama mornings can be in the 20s and afternoons in the 60s. Dress in layers.
- Get your license before you travel. Buy it online and keep a digital copy on your phone.
- Practice out to 200 yards. Most Black Belt shots are closer, but food plot and power-line shots can be long.
- Hunt the cold fronts. The first cold snap after a warm spell often triggers the best daytime movement of the season.
- Stay close to your stand. Staying on the property saves hours of driving and lets you hunt morning and evening every day.
